Online therapy has proven to be an effective and convenient alternative to in-person therapy for a wide range of presenting problems.
Despite global events outside of our control, online therapeutic processes can proceed unhindered.
It is important to bear in mind that when meeting online, we have slightly less access to certain subtle relational cues available to us in a traditional, face-to-face session. For some, starting an online therapeutic process is preferable for this exact reason. Working therapeutically online introduces choice in how one engages that is not available in the traditional therapeutic setting.
There are certain situations in which traditional face-to-face therapy may however be indicated. This includes the experience of acute mental health problems, such as mania or psychosis, substance dependence, or a high risk of harm to self or others. If, at intake, or during subsequent therapy sessions, traditional face-to-face therapy is deemed more appropriate, the therapeutic process will be halted. Alternative referral suggestions will be provided. Telephone/online psychotherapy with the Clinical Psychologist is not a substitute for medication under the care of a psychiatrist or doctor.
Online services offered
I offer individual online or telephonic psychotherapy to adults (18 years and over). I consult via video or audio format.
Video sessions are possible with secure online platforms such as Zoom or Skype. Video format most resembles working face to face.Audio sessions are also possible, either via a regular phone call, or via various online platforms, with the video function turned off.
I would gladly discuss your preferences in this regard.
Online process:
- A period of assessment, consisting of 2-3 sessions, will form the first part of our therapeutic process. During the assessment phase, the client/patient will be asked questions regarding their symptoms and personal history. This is to make sure that the nature of the problem(s), and the context in which it arose is understood.
- Following assessment, if we decide to continue working together, sessions will be scheduled on a weekly basis, at a set time, for 50 minutes duration each. More frequent sessions may be deemed appropriate in view of a client/patient´s presentation.
- The duration of psychotherapeutic treatment varies depending on the presenting problem, nature of stressors, and so forth. Expectations around the duration of treatment will be discussed with clients/patients upon completion of the assessment phase.
- Please note that no forensic or psycho-legal services are provided.
- Please note that psychometric and neuropsychological assessment services are not provided, although referral can be made.
- Sessions are provided strictly by appointment. Please note that it is the client’s/ patient´s responsibility to honour appointments, as arranged and confirmed during psychotherapy consults. Appointments are recorded using your initials on a password protected electronic calendar.
- If changes need to be made to the date or time of appointments, or in the event of any queries, I can most reliably be reached via email (therapy@aninaamorim.com), or alternatively, through the number dedicated to my practice (+ 27 796038322). Queries will be responded to within 24 hours, within office hours.
